Using your moon sign as a tool for self discovery
Have you ever wondered how your weekly horoscope can *possibly* be accurate when you share your star sign with 1/12 of the population? Of course you have...and that's because sun signs (often referred to as your star sign) are just the beginning. In fact, sun signs are often said to represent your life purpose - who you're learning to be - not necessarily who you feel like you are right now. So if you've ever felt like you just don't particularly identify with your star sign, that's probably because there are so many other factors at play. Let's take a look at how we can make sense of, understand and interpret this key area of your astrological birth chart.
Let’s start things off by looking to the moon for clues about our psyche. It's a beautiful ball of magical sparkliness, isn't it? But we all know it's not just a pretty face. It controls our tides, and affects so many of our other environmental cycles in powerful ways. It's super meaningful in terms of astrology because it's so close to us, and it quite literally revolves around our little planet. Many astrologers believe it's of equal importance to our sun sign, and the moon is thought to reflect our emotional, inner selves. Some of us may even feel we resonate better with our moon than our sun sign (tick!).
So, first things first, you'll need your birth chart to work from. Try this birth chart generator, and maybe print your chart if you can so that you have somewhere to scribble notes and discoveries. I think intuitively journalling your way through your own birth chart as you learn is something everyone should experience - even if you're skeptical - as it's such a powerful tool for self discovery.
Just like your sun sign (or star sign) tells you where in the zodiac the sun was sitting at the time you were born, your moon sign works in exactly the same way. So for example, like me, you might have the moon in Pisces...or any tiny babas born literally as I write this will have the moon in Scorpio.
How can I find out what my moon sign is?
The moon moves through the signs of the zodiac lots quicker than the sun does. So, while sun signs span the the best part of a month, the moon moves into a different sign every 2-3 days. For that reason, it's useful to know what time you were born*, just in case the moon was in the process of moving into the next sign of the zodiac.
To find your moon sign, look for the moon symbol on your chart, and see which section of the zodiac it falls under. It should be listed under your chart too.
*If you don't know what time you were born, try 12:00pm. If the moon was in the same sign for the entire day, you're in luck! Failing that, feel free to explore both signs that appear and see which one feels most relevant to you. I also massively recommend the free app Moon Phase (not an affiliate) for general moon info for the past and present.
Got it? Yay! So let's talk about how the signs *style* your emotional moon energy. The first clue comes from looking at the element (fire, air, water, earth) of the sign in question. So for example, a moon in Pisces would have a very watery feel. What does water remind you of, particularly in terms of emotions? Tears? Drowning? Waves and tides? At its core, this basic analysis might suggest that you are highly emotionally sensitive, and potentially prone to feeling overwhelmed by your feelings (my moon is in Pisces, and this resonates with me in a big way!).
Take a look at the list below of signs and their elements, and begin by considering what the element associated with your moon sign says about your emotions and inner self. A useful approach is to list what emotions come to mind when you consider each element. So, fire might suggest warmth, vibrance, possibly anger, passion... make a few notes and see what comes up!
Fire | Earth | Air | Water |
Aries | Taurus | Gemini | Cancer |
Leo | Virgo | Libra | Scorpio |
Sagittarius | Capricorn | Aquarius | Pisces |
What discoveries did you make? Is there anything that resonates with you particularly? This is just the beginning, but hopefully it has given you some prompts to think about and explore.
